Among the natural treasures of Gilgit-Baltistan, the Chilgoza pine (Pinus gerardiana) occupies a special place. More than merely a forest tree, it represents a potentially valuable combination of biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, rural livelihoods and high-value agricultural enterprise. Its natural forests in Diamer District demonstrate that the ecological conditions necessary for this remarkable conifer already exist within Gilgit-Baltistan.

The question, therefore, is not simply how to protect the Chilgoza forests that remain, but whether their natural range can, through scientific research and careful propagation, be extended to other suitable valleys of the region.

A rare tree with exceptional economic value

Chilgoza is an evergreen conifer whose edible seeds are among the world's high-value nuts. The tree generally grows in the dry temperate mountain belt at elevations of approximately 2,000–3,350 metres. The Gilgit-Baltistan Forest Department records it as a tree normally reaching around 10–20 metres, with distinctive large cones and edible seeds.

Unlike many commercially cultivated fruit trees, Chilgoza is extremely slow-growing. Consequently, its cultivation cannot be viewed as a quick-return agricultural project. It is, rather, an investment for future generations. This long gestation period makes the preservation of existing mature trees especially important: destroying a mature Chilgoza tree means sacrificing decades of natural growth.

Its economic importance, however, can provide a powerful incentive for conservation. FAO and IUCN have highlighted the potential of Chilgoza value chains to improve mountain livelihoods while simultaneously encouraging communities to protect the forests on which those livelihoods depend.

Diamer: the natural Chilgoza heartland of GB

Diamer is particularly significant because Chilgoza occurs naturally across a number of its valleys. FAO identifies Hodur, Khanbery, Goharabad, Chilas, Darel, Tangir, Botogah, Thor, Khinar and Doshal among the Chilgoza-bearing areas of Diamer.

This natural distribution is important for another reason. It establishes that Pinus gerardiana is not an exotic species being artificially introduced into Gilgit-Baltistan. It is already part of the region's indigenous mountain ecology.

Indeed, the Gilgit-Baltistan Forest, Wildlife and Environment Department describes Chilgoza as potentially occurring on the lower slopes of Diamer and notes sparse populations in lower Astore, Nagar and Ghizer.

Diamer can therefore serve as a regional genetic, ecological and practical knowledge base for any future Chilgoza propagation programme.

Can Chilgoza be propagated beyond Diamer?

The answer appears to be potentially yes—but only after proper ecological assessment.

The fact that the species already occurs naturally in Diamer, while also being recorded in parts of Astore, Nagar and Ghizer, suggests that its ecological envelope may extend beyond its best-known concentrations. Moreover, scientific habitat-suitability modelling has identified areas within Gilgit-Baltistan among locations potentially highly suitable for Chilgoza.

But propagation should not mean planting Chilgoza indiscriminately throughout the region.

The species is associated with a particular combination of elevation, temperature, precipitation, soil, slope and dry-temperate ecological conditions. Its natural habitat commonly receives relatively limited rainfall, with much of the precipitation occurring as snow.

Consequently, valleys such as parts of Astore, Ghizer, Nagar, Darel, Tangir and other dry, cold mountain environments could be investigated systematically rather than assumed to be suitable.

From natural regeneration to deliberate propagation

A major lesson from existing Chilgoza conservation programmes is that nature itself can be assisted rather than replaced.

Pakistan's Chilgoza restoration initiative has used Assisted Natural Regeneration (ANR)—protecting suitable forest patches from grazing and other pressures so that naturally emerging seedlings can survive. The national programme established dozens of ANR sites and has reported millions of natural seedlings under restoration efforts.

This approach is particularly relevant to Gilgit-Baltistan.

Instead of relying exclusively on expensive plantations, a three-pronged strategy could be adopted:

  1. Protect existing natural Chilgoza forests in Diamer.
  2. Encourage and protect natural regeneration wherever seedlings already occur.
  3. Establish experimental plantations and nurseries in ecologically suitable valleys.

Such a strategy would reduce the risk of treating Chilgoza simply as another commercial plantation crop.

A nursery programme for GB

A dedicated Gilgit-Baltistan Chilgoza Nursery and Propagation Programme could be established through the Forest Department in collaboration with agricultural universities, research institutions and local communities.

Seeds collected responsibly from healthy, locally adapted trees could be raised in nurseries and subsequently transplanted into carefully selected sites.

The Diamer experience provides an encouraging precedent. The Gilgit-Baltistan Forest Department reports that the Chilgoza project established 40 hectares of block plantation and a 0.5-hectare nursery in Diamer, in addition to distributing thousands of forest and fruit plants in target areas.

The next logical step would be to establish small experimental Chilgoza plots across several potentially suitable valleys, rather than immediately attempting large-scale plantation.

After five, ten and more years, survival rates, growth, soil conditions, water requirements and natural regeneration could be scientifically evaluated. The successful sites could then be expanded.

The grazing problem must be addressed

One of the greatest obstacles to Chilgoza regeneration is not necessarily the absence of seeds but the inability of young seedlings to survive.

FAO has identified uncontrolled grazing, overharvesting, illegal wood cutting, land conversion and climate change among the principal pressures on Chilgoza ecosystems.

Young Chilgoza plantations would therefore need temporary protection from livestock. Community-managed grazing-exclusion zones could allow seedlings to establish themselves until they become sufficiently robust.

This is where traditional community institutions could become an important partner of the Forest Department. Instead of imposing conservation from above, communities could be given a direct economic stake in the survival of the trees.

Chilgoza as a climate and watershed asset

The importance of Chilgoza extends beyond its nuts.

As a long-lived mountain conifer, its forests contribute to soil protection, biodiversity conservation, carbon storage and slope stability. Restoring degraded Chilgoza landscapes could therefore produce environmental benefits alongside financial returns.

This is particularly relevant at a time when Gilgit-Baltistan faces increasing pressure from climate variability, changing precipitation patterns, wildfires, land degradation and other environmental stresses.

Scientific research also indicates that climate change can affect Chilgoza regeneration, germination, reproduction and the suitability of its habitat.

Thus, any expansion programme should incorporate climate-resilient site selection rather than simply reproducing the present distribution of the species.

Value addition: don't sell only the raw nut

Another important opportunity lies in developing the Chilgoza value chain within Gilgit-Baltistan.

FAO established a Chilgoza processing facility at Chilas to enable cleaning, grading, roasting, packing and labelling, thereby allowing communities to capture more value from their produce.

This concept deserves further development.

Instead of exporting or transporting raw Chilgoza, GB could develop a recognizable "Gilgit-Baltistan Chilgoza" premium brand, supported by quality standards, hygienic processing, attractive packaging and traceability.

Such an initiative could create employment not only in forests but also in collection, processing, packaging, transportation, marketing and tourism-related retail.

A 25-year investment for future generations

The slow growth of Chilgoza might initially appear to be its greatest weakness. In reality, it can become its greatest strength if viewed through the lens of long-term ecological planning.

A Chilgoza plantation established today may not provide substantial commercial returns for many years. But a tree planted by today's generation could eventually become an economic asset for their children and grandchildren.

This makes Chilgoza particularly suitable for a "plant today, prosper tomorrow" philosophy of mountain development.

The objective should not be to replace food crops or existing forests with Chilgoza. Rather, marginal, degraded and ecologically appropriate mountain sites should be identified where Chilgoza can coexist with existing vegetation and community land-use systems.

A proposed Chilgoza corridor for Gilgit-Baltistan

Gilgit-Baltistan could ultimately consider establishing a Chilgoza Restoration and Propagation Corridor, beginning with Diamer and gradually extending to scientifically verified suitable locations elsewhere.

The programme could include:

  • mapping existing natural Chilgoza populations;
  • identifying potential new habitats through GIS and ecological surveys;
  • establishing community nurseries;
  • collecting and preserving local genetic material;
  • raising seedlings from locally adapted seed;
  • creating protected regeneration zones;
  • controlling destructive grazing;
  • training local communities in scientific cone collection;
  • establishing demonstration plantations;
  • developing local processing and packaging;
  • creating a GB Chilgoza brand; and
  • maintaining long-term monitoring plots.

The emphasis should be on science before scale: first determine where Chilgoza thrives naturally, then expand cautiously.

Diamer's Chilgoza forests: a legacy worth multiplying

Diamer's Chilgoza forests should therefore be regarded not merely as a source of an expensive dry fruit, but as a living natural laboratory and genetic resource for Gilgit-Baltistan.

The species' presence in Diamer, together with its sparse occurrence in Astore, Nagar and Ghizer, provides a compelling basis for investigating whether its cultivation can be extended to other suitable mountain environments.

The opportunity is particularly attractive because conservation and economic development can reinforce each other. If communities earn a reliable income from standing Chilgoza trees, the incentive to cut those trees for fuel or timber diminishes. International restoration experience already demonstrates the value of linking Chilgoza conservation with community livelihoods.

The challenge before Gilgit-Baltistan is therefore not simply to save the Chilgoza forests of Diamer, but to ask whether Diamer's natural heritage can become the seed of a wider Chilgoza landscape across the region.

If scientifically suitable valleys are identified today and nurseries and protected regeneration plots are established, Chilgoza could become a long-term green investment for GB—simultaneously conserving mountain ecosystems, strengthening rural economies and creating an inheritance of living wealth for future generations.
