I recently came across a compelling appeal on social media from the civil society of Gilgit-Baltistan, advocating for the due recognition of Dr. Fazil Hussain, a distinguished medical specialist, compassionate humanitarian, and selfless doctor who has dedicated his life to serving the people of the region. His unwavering commitment during the COVID-19 pandemic and his exemplary service to humanity have earned him immense respect and admiration.
A Call for Recognition
The civil society has strongly urged the government to bestow upon Dr. Fazil Hussain the prestigious civilian award in acknowledgment of his invaluable contributions. It is pertinent to mention that Dr. Fazil was recommended by the Gilgit-Baltistan Government for the national award under Sl. No.07 of No.SO(G)-1(68)/2019 (Awards) dated 04.08.2020, addressed to the Joint Secretary (Awards), Cabinet Division, Islamabad. However, despite this recommendation, the matter remains unresolved, depriving him of the rightful recognition he so justly deserves.
The delay in processing such a genuine and deserving case has caused rightful indignation among the people of Gilgit-Baltistan, who have witnessed firsthand the sacrifices he made during the pandemic.
A Dedicated Medical Professional
Dr. Fazil Hussain is widely known and respected among the general public for his unwavering commitment to the medical profession. He is admired not only for his expertise as a medical specialist but also for his deep empathy and dedication to humanity. He has always prioritized his patients' well-being over his own, often going to great lengths to ensure they receive the care they need.
A Frontline Warrior Against COVID-19
At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Dr. Fazil Hussain was among the first medical professionals in Gilgit-Baltistan to step forward and combat the virus. He tirelessly worked on the frontlines, treating patients without regard for his personal safety. His services spanned across the region, from Nagar to Chilas, wherever medical aid was required. He also served as the in-charge of the Mohammadabad COVID-19 Isolation Center, ensuring that patients received the best possible treatment under challenging circumstances.
Even when he himself fell ill, Dr. Fazil continued his duties, going so far as to treat patients while having an IV cannula in his hand. His dedication was so profound that he made home visits to ensure his patients received the necessary medical care.
His Own Battle with COVID-19
Unfortunately, in the line of duty, Dr. Fazil contracted COVID-19, which caused severe damage to both of his lungs. His condition deteriorated rapidly, and he struggled to breathe. He was admitted to the ICU+ at PHQ Hospital, where he spent 18 days on oxygen support. By the grace of Allah and the prayers of countless individuals, he miraculously recovered and was discharged.
Adding to the emotional and physical toll, his wife, who is also a doctor, was simultaneously serving on the COVID-19 frontline, making the ordeal even more challenging for their family. The immense mental stress and hardship they endured only underscore the magnitude of their sacrifices.
Recognizing his exceptional service, the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan initially nominated him for the Presidential Award, but for reasons unknown, his nomination did not progress further. This unfortunate oversight has led to widespread discontent among those who acknowledge his sacrifices and contributions.
A New Struggle – Permanent Health Damage
Dr. Fazil’s battle did not end with COVID-19. The severity of the illness caused a complete blockage of blood supply to his hip joints, resulting in excruciating pain and an inability to walk without assistance. For three years, he relied on a cane to move around, enduring immense discomfort. His first hip surgery, performed three years ago, was unsuccessful.
Eventually, in 2024, he underwent another major operation at Al-Shifa Hospital, Islamabad, where both of his hip joints were replaced. By the grace of Allah and the prayers of the people, his condition has significantly improved. However, the pain, suffering, and long-term health consequences he has endured are undeniable.
A Call for Recognition and Justice
Highlighting this story is not merely about acknowledging Dr. Fazil Hussain’s hardships but about ensuring that his extraordinary sacrifices receive the official recognition they deserve. As we continue to pray for his complete recovery, it is imperative that his selfless dedication to the people of Gilgit-Baltistan during the critical hours of the pandemic is rightfully acknowledged.
Granting him the honor he has earned will not only uplift his morale but also serve as an inspiration to others in the medical profession. It will send a powerful message that those who dedicate their lives to serving humanity will never be forgotten. Recognizing Dr. Fazil Hussain’s sacrifices will encourage future generations of doctors and healthcare professionals to follow in his footsteps, serving with the same unwavering dedication and compassion.
