From Hop Shoots to Green Tea: An Emerging Agricultural Opportunity from Nasirabad, Hunza


A video circulating on social media on 3 September 2026 from Nasirabad in Hunza has brought an intriguing agricultural experiment into the public spotlight: the cultivation of hop (Humulus lupulus), particularly its tender young shoots, which are reportedly harvested initially as a vegetable, while subsequent growth is being explored for use in making a green-tea-like beverage.

If the observations being reported are substantiated through scientific trials, this could prove to be an interesting addition to the agricultural possibilities of Gilgit-Baltistan.

It becomes ascertainable that “Hop Shoot plant” means Humulus lupulus, which is actually a large perennial climbing vine, not a small vegetable plant.

  • Vine length: commonly 4–7 metres (13–23 ft) in a growing season; vigorous plants can reach 8–9 metres (26–30 ft) under favourable conditions.
  • Spread: the underground crown/rhizome system expands with age, producing several climbing shoots.
  • Growth: the shoots climb around strings, poles, trellises or other supports rather than standing upright by themselves.
  • Season: the above-ground vines generally die back after the growing season, while the perennial crown and rhizomes remain alive underground and produce new shoots the following spring.
  • For edible hop shoots: the tender new shoots are harvested when they are still young—well before the plant develops into its full climbing vine.

Why this matters for Nasirabad, and other similar areas of GB

If the objective is to cultivate hop shoots as a vegetable, the plant's ultimate height is less important than how many tender shoots a crown produces each spring and how easily they can be harvested. A relatively small experimental plot could therefore be managed with a suitable low trellis or support system rather than allowing the vines to climb to their maximum height.

For the Nasirabad experiment, it would be particularly useful to record the number of shoots produced per plant, their length and thickness, and the weight harvested from each crown. That would provide much stronger evidence of whether hop shoots are commercially promising in Hunza and other areas of the region.

An unusual crop with multiple possibilities

Hop is perhaps better known internationally for its cones, which are used in brewing. Less widely known is the fact that its young shoots are edible and regarded in some parts of Europe as a seasonal speciality vegetable. They are harvested when tender and prepared in ways similar to asparagus.

This makes the Nasirabad experiment particularly interesting. Instead of viewing the plant solely as a conventional crop, it raises the possibility of obtaining different forms of value from different stages of its growth—the tender early shoots as a vegetable and later plant material as a potential ingredient for tea or other value-added products.

The latter possibility, however, deserves proper scientific examination. Research has identified various polyphenols, flavonoids and other bioactive compounds in hop leaves and other parts of the plant, and experimental studies have investigated their antioxidant properties and possible food applications. Such findings provide a reason for further investigation, but they should not automatically be interpreted as proof of medicinal benefits from a locally prepared hop tea.

Why the Nasirabad experiment deserves attention

Agriculture in Gilgit-Baltistan faces distinctive constraints: limited arable land, mountainous terrain, varying elevations, water availability and a relatively short growing season. The region therefore needs to explore crops that can provide higher returns from relatively small areas of cultivated land.

If hop proves adaptable to the climatic and soil conditions of Nasirabad and comparable areas of Hunza, it could potentially offer:

  • an early-season speciality vegetable;
  • a further harvest or useful biomass later in the season;
  • opportunities for drying and processing;
  • a possible locally branded herbal or specialty tea, subject to scientific validation;
  • diversification of farmers' incomes; and
  • an additional product for the growing market for distinctive mountain foods and beverages.

It could also fit into the broader concept of value-added mountain agriculture, whereby agricultural produce is not simply sold in its raw form but is processed, packaged and marketed as a premium product.

Scientific confirmation should come first

At this stage, however, it would be desirable to distinguish between an encouraging local experiment and an agriculturally validated crop recommendation.

The claims and observations emerging from the Nasirabad experiment should ideally be examined by the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) Research Centre at Juglote, Gilgit, in collaboration where appropriate with the Agriculture Department of Gilgit-Baltistan.

A proper field trial could determine:

  1. Whether hop is genuinely well adapted to Nasirabad and other comparable areas of Hunza;
  2. Which variety performs best under local conditions;
  3. The quantity and quality of edible young shoots produced;
  4. The appropriate timing and method of harvesting;
  5. The plant's capacity for regeneration after the first shoot harvest;
  6. Whether the subsequent leaves or other plant material are suitable and safe for tea preparation;
  7. The nutritional and phytochemical characteristics of the locally produced material;
  8. Its water, soil, trellising and other cultivation requirements; and
  9. Most importantly, whether cultivation would be economically worthwhile for local farmers.

Such research would convert an interesting observation into reliable agricultural knowledge.

A case for responsible popularisation

If the PARC Research Centre at Juglote and/or the Agriculture Department of Gilgit-Baltistan confirms through proper trials that hop is beneficial, safe, commercially viable and suitably adapted to the region, there would then be a strong case for its systematic popularisation among farmers.

This could include demonstration plots, farmer training, provision of suitable planting material, technical guidance on trellising and harvesting, and research into drying, processing, packaging and marketing.

Rather than encouraging indiscriminate plantation immediately, a pilot-to-promotion approach would be preferable: first verify, then demonstrate, then promote.

From Nasirabad to a possible GB agricultural initiative

The significance of the Nasirabad experiment may ultimately extend beyond the plant itself. Gilgit-Baltistan possesses a remarkable diversity of mountain agricultural products, yet much of its produce is still marketed with limited processing and value addition.

Hop could become another example of an unconventional crop being tested against the region's unique environment. If successful, it might demonstrate how innovation, scientific validation and traditional farming knowledge can work together to create new sources of rural income.

The video circulating from Nasirabad on 3 September has therefore done something valuable: it has drawn attention to a possibility that deserves investigation.

The next step should be scientific confirmation rather than mere enthusiasm. If the results stand up to research, the humble hop shoot could potentially move from an experimental plantation in Nasirabad to a new speciality crop of Hunza and, perhaps, of Gilgit-Baltistan as a whole.

Nasirabad has raised the question; now agricultural science should provide the answer.
