Concluding our memorable sojourn in California, we began our journey back to Pakistan on the evening of May 23 (California Standard Time), once again choosing the reliable services of Qatar Airways. With a sense of both fulfillment and nostalgia, we boarded our return flight from San Francisco International Airport, carrying with us not only our belongings but also a trove of cherished memories accumulated over the preceding weeks. As the aircraft ascended into the Pacific skies, leaving behind the golden state of California, a bittersweet sentiment settled in—one marked by gratitude for the experiences we had enjoyed and an awareness that we were heading back to the demanding rhythm of responsibilities and daily life in Pakistan.
Our travel itinerary involved a relatively short layover at Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar—a modern, efficient, and traveler-friendly hub that provided just enough time to refresh and prepare ourselves for the second leg of our journey. Unlike our initial outbound flight on May 6, which, though satisfactory, had felt slightly more taxing, this return flight proved to be noticeably more relaxed, seamless, and comfortable in every sense. From the courteous cabin crew to the enhanced meal service, from the ample in-flight entertainment options to the smooth cruising conditions, everything contributed to a remarkably pleasant and rejuvenating travel experience.
The overall journey, while long in terms of hours and distance, was made considerably easier thanks to the well-coordinated service and the thoughtfully maintained comfort levels aboard the aircraft. Despite spanning continents and crossing multiple time zones, the transition from the serene and sun-kissed Californian coastline to the dramatic and rugged beauty of our mountainous homeland felt almost poetic in its pacing. The gradual shift—from one familiar landscape to another equally familiar yet vastly different one—was gentle, seamless, and surprisingly easy on the mind and body.
It is worth noting here that our travel authorization to remain in the United States was valid until the end of August, and our return flight was initially booked for September 2. This extended validity had been planned with the intent of allowing a longer and more immersive stay—giving us time not only to explore more of California but also, perhaps, to travel to other parts of the country. However, as is often the case with life’s unpredictability, an urgent domestic matter arose back home in Pakistan, requiring our immediate presence. This unforeseen development left us with no choice but to curtail our trip and reschedule our return at relatively short notice.
Though shortened, our time in San Francisco—spanning roughly one and a half months—was nothing short of enriching and unforgettable. It offered us not just a glimpse into life in one of the most iconic and picturesque cities in the United States, but also moments of profound peace, awe, and appreciation. The city’s blend of natural splendor and cosmopolitan energy, its eclectic neighborhoods, iconic landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge, and the rolling hills that characterize its unique urban topography—all came together to create a deeply rewarding experience.
During our stay, we also ventured beyond the immediate boundaries of San Francisco, exploring several nearby destinations of exceptional charm and beauty. Each place we visited seemed to outdo the last, offering new vistas, new experiences, and new reasons to marvel at the diversity and grandeur of California’s landscapes. From tranquil lakeside retreats and vibrant parks to bustling piers and serene nature reserves, every location brought with it a sense of wonder and discovery. These destinations possess an almost timeless allure—one that gently tugs at the traveler’s heart and invites them to linger a little longer, to savor the quiet moments, and to immerse themselves in the ambiance of peace and scenic splendor.
As we now settle back into the rhythm of life in Pakistan, surrounded by the majestic mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan, we carry with us the echoes of California’s gentle breeze, the sound of waves lapping against its shores, and the vivid memories of laughter, reflection, and exploration that defined our brief but impactful stay. Though the journey was cut short, it left an indelible mark—one that will continue to inspire fond recollection for years to come.
A window to Northern Areas-I, The Muslim dated July 4, 1997. By Syed Shamsuddin Most of our people even today seem quite oblivious of the geo-political position of Northern Areas while the exact historical background concerning Gilgit-Baltistan and where these must stand politically remains yet another subject of discussion. Not to speak of a layman, a person of the stature of Chief Executive of the country, once inquired whether the Northern Areas an integral part of the north west frontier province (NWFP). This happened when he rule the country in the aftermath of martial law. Yet another minister on Kashmir and Northern Areas, during the democratic government that followed, was pleased to tell a member of the northern areas council that he owed his minisitership not to them (Northern Areas people) but to the turbaned man of his constituency, standing at the door of his official chambers. There is infact, dearth of substantial historical evidence as to when exactly man ...
